Unbinding the Spells

Why is it so difficult to find the words? I keep searching for that Abracadabra phase that I can use to break people out of the spell of stupefication that holds sway over them.

I’ve done my best to present the “Science” but to no avail. I’ve learned that in today’s world the term — science — is just a stand in to identify religious factions. How did that happen? The science that I grew up with was skeptical and critical, aimed at expanding the horizons of knowledge. …

We live in a brave new world where expert opinion and the edicts of authority now dominate our everyday lives. We are told that “the science says” and that leads us to this place where our activities are constrained for the sake of safety and public health. Individualism and liberty are replaced by group think and the good of the community. All of this HAS to happen due to existential threat of the pandemic virus. Regardless of the merits of this new focus, we need to acknowledge that this is being imposed through overt force.

Those experts and authorities are…

The time is upon us. A COVID-19 vaccine will soon be made available to “protect you” from the scourge of SARS-CoV-2. What will you do, when it is offered? You owe it to yourself to be well informed about what this COVID vaccine is, what it does for you and to you, and your reasoning behind the decision to take or decline the shot.

As I have written about before: what vaccines are, what they do in the body, and their impact on health is a complex topic. Take all of those issues and apply an exponential to the complexity…

Time For a Practical Plan

The plan to mitigate the spread of SARS CoV-2 is not working. The people of Nevada have been doing what they’ve been told. What is going wrong? More mask wear correlates with higher rates of infection. The Governor tells us it’s because of too much interaction between people so, on Veteran’s Day 2020, he proclaimed “Stay at Home 2.0”. But does that address the root cause of spread?

Obviously not because as he implores Nevadans to only leave home for essential work or errands, in the next breath he welcomes tourists to our state. Tourism…

Science Says

It’s funny how the further I travel my path in life, the more convinced I am that the important lessons are learned in the early years. Who remembers the game “Simon Says”? It’s another one of those silly games that young children play — except it perhaps is not that silly.

A quick review: one person, Simon, is in control of the group. The players are put into a formation and Simon barks orders at them to do random and complicated tasks. “Simon says, rub your belly and pat your head”. The goal is for Simon confuse the…

Un-Cage the Animal

Free-living humans are not to be locked up. What has happened in our society for the last three months has been a demonstration of the limits of control that authoritarians are able to exert upon those they see as animals.

It’s for your safety, we need to flatten the curve, out of an abundance of caution…

Even those in my public health community, who speak of being less restrictive, talk about letting the virus spread naturally in order to achieve herd immunity.

I choose to not be a member of the herd. I am not an animal…

In a World of Magical Thinking

The people in my community have gone to a very strange place. Fear has led to actions that don’t make sense. But beyond that, my community has come to a point of performing rituals that make life much harder for everyone. We’re used to rituals being a part of religious ceremonies, fraternity indoctrinations, and activities that bind groups together. But those rituals are meant to bracket a specific event in a specific setting. A ritual is used to mark an opening or closing. It has symbolic meaning within context of the actual, purposeful event…

First, Ask Good Questions

Science is based on skepticism. Beware of the person, who presents himself wearing the mantle of scientist, who then goes on to convince you that he has all the answers. Somehow, within the last decade or so, a term has been infiltrated into public discussions and arguments over policy and decision making — “the science is settled”. What a pernicious if not flat out evil term. Because only dogma is settled. Only those who have a product to sell, an agenda to push, or a population to control will tell you that.

Since science sets out…

As we stumble into the end of the winter of our discontent, this April 2020, I am at the point of feeling rather dejected as I follow the media, listen to the experts and authorities. The people around me, my community and country, seem compelled by them, controlled by them, into participating in a slow-motion population suicide.

I am observing a global telephone game. Even people that I wouldn’t expect seem to want to play. I can still remember the first time I played the telephone game in fifth grade. The teacher put the entire class in a circle that…

As we all work to figure out which way is up and what to believe in the crazy world of March 2020, I would like to offer a framework that can be used to help make sense of some of it.

Here is both the starting and finishing point — you and I will never get to the Truth of what the COVID-19/Wuhan/novel Corona virus panic/pandemic is all about. Taking a thoughtful journey through the maze, though, can help you gain useful insights — it is worth the trip.

Infectious disease pandemics is an unknown world for most people. So…
